Rho Kappa was established as a national organization in 2011 by the NCSS.  The society aims to promote scholarship and leadership in social studies education and encourage civic engagement among its members.  The name "Rho Kappa" comes from two Semitic words: "resh" (meaning "head") and "kapf" (meaning "palm of the hand"), symbolizing the belief that knowledge without service is useless. Rho Kappa focuses on the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership & civic engagement.
