Dear Cahokia Unit School District 187 Parents/Guardians:

The media has been filled with rumors and speculation regarding the upcoming grand jury announcement regarding the Michael Brown case and the decision concerning possible charges against Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.  Specifically there are concerns of community reaction depending on the grand jury decision.  The possibility of protest regarding the decision and the effect on local communities is the reason for this letter.

Student safety has always been among the highest priority of Cahokia Unit School District 187.  The unknown public reaction and the possibility of clashes between groups of protesters and authorities create a concern for the safety of our students.  Area superintendents have been told that a minimum of 24 hours notice will be given prior to an announcement being made.  Dependent on the time of the announcement and community reaction, the school district will decide what arrangements, if any will be made to insure that students are safe both at school and arriving and returning home from school.  These arrangements could involve the possible cancellation of school.

If it is determined that school needs to be cancelled, the district will follow the same procedures we follow for snow days.  A robo-call will go out to parents and staff announcing the close of school.  If for some reason school needs to be cancelled for multiple days, a call will be made each day.  Please be sure that your child’s school has an updated number for you so you receive information regarding this situation.

I am hopeful these precautionary plans will not have to be implemented, school is not interrupted and that everyone will be able to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Arthur S. Ryan,

Superintendent
